Airport Division - Patrol Officers

The San Jose Police Airport Division provides patrol services for
Mineta San Jose International Airport (SJC) utilizing officers on foot, bicycle, and Segway as well as in police
patrol cars. Additionally, some officers work with “bomb dogs,” specially trained explosives detection canines.

The newest police vehicles at SJC are Segway Personal Transporters,
individual mobile platforms which travel at speeds up to 12.5 mph. Increasing the visibility of the patrol officers by placing them
eight inches above the crowds in the airport, they provide quick, quiet transportation through airport terminals.

The Airport Division fielded the first full-time SJPD Bicycle Patrol in 1992 with two officers. Now, a third of the officers
assigned to the division have been certified through the state-mandated course for police bike-patrol officers. Bicycles provide
added mobility on the heavily congested roadways, parking lots, sidewalks, and in airport terminal buildings at SJC.

Once the standard of police work, some of the last regularly assigned foot beats in San Jose are walked by Airport
Division officers in the airline terminals.
