National Night Out
Your neighborhood is invited to participate on Tuesday evening August 4, 2009, with many other neighborhoods across the country in the celebration of National Night Out. National Night Out is a crime and drug prevention event that is sponsored nationally by the National Association of Town Watch and co-sponsored locally by the San Jose Police Department. This year marks the 26th annual event and over 34 million people across the country are expected to participate.
National Night Out is designed to:
- Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness.
- Generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime efforts.
- Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police/community partnerships.
- Send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
The City of San Jose is a nationally registered participant in this year’s event. Join us today by registering your neighborhood and help us to “GIVE CRIME AND DRUGS A GOING AWAY PARTY!”

Event Questions & Answers
Q: If San Jose is already registered nationally, why should my neighborhood register with SJPD?
A: The Crime Prevention Unit of the San Jose Police Department will log your event, number of participants, time and location. This will allow us to try and have Police and other City representatives stop by and visit your event.
Q: How can our neighborhood participate in this year’s National Night Out?
A: Participating neighborhoods nationwide are asked to turn on outside lights, lock their doors, and spend the evening outside with neighbors and Police. Neighborhoods will be hosting a variety of events ranging from small pot-lucks and BBQ’s to large block parties. It’s up to you. See back panel for more ideas for your event.
Q: Is National Night Out just for current Neighborhood Watch areas?
A: No!!! National Night Out is for everyone. The exciting thing about National Night Out is the opportunity to meet neighbors and celebrate your neighborhood. It’s also a good opportunity to look toward the future and plan events to promote neighborhood safety and unity.
Q: When should we begin planning our National Night Out event?
A: Today! Register now and begin planning your event as soon as possible
