San Jose Reserve Unit – Recruiting the Best

PROGRAM PURPOSE AND DESCRIPTION
The San Jose Police Reserve is a volunteer organization that provides emergency callback to the Police Department on a 24-hour basis. The Police Reserve provides assistance for numerous Department relief, special functions and community events. It assists the Secondary Employment Unit by coordinating and assigning officers to work compensated assignments that assist with the orderly flow of traffic during street improvement and repair. The Police Reserve works closely with the Community Services Division and BFO to support the Police Department’s Community Policing goals. This is accomplished with the help of the Reserve Bicycle Unit, Ride-Along Program and school presentations.
PROGRAM OBJECTIVES
- Maintain the Reserve force for FY 2008-2009 at 100 sworn Reserve Officers
- Provide the maximum number of Reserve donated hours to the City of San Jose for police assistance, consistent with the existing labor guidelines and management objectives.
- Maintain and enhance the training of Reserves in accordance with the Department’s CPT schedule and provide P.O.S.T. required Level II training.
- Provide community service hours through the Crime Prevention Unit, the VOLT program and Student Academy Ride-Along Programs. Perform Community Policing at special events (i.e. Christmas in the Park, Monopoly in the Park, parades, festivals and civic presentations.
- Coordinate referrals for compensated assignments.
