Court Liaison Unit (CLU)
Welcome to the Court Liaison Unit (CLU). CLU reviews crime reports generated by Patrol Officers in order to assign and route cases to the appropriate unit within the Bureau of Investigations.
For cases assigned to the Court Liaison Unit, CLU personnel are issued case assignments for processing with the District Attorney’s Office and Courts in order to seek criminal charges.
Examples of Violations Processed by the Court Liaison Unit:
- Alcohol Sales to Minors
- Assault/Battery
- Driving Under the Influence (DUI)
- False Information to an Officer
- False Personation
- All Narcotics related cases (Possession/Influence/Sales)
- Obstructing/Resisting Arrest
- Petty Theft
- Public Intoxication
- Trespassing (602PC)
- Vandalism
Additionally, the Court Liaison Unit is responsible for managing Witness Coordination; a process which coordinates Officer and civilian witnesses for court appearances regarding criminal, civil and traffic cases.
Any Court Liaison assigned case which has fulfilled the judicial process and has associated property will be referred to the CLU property officer for property clearance.
Case Management / Criminal Complaints:
The Court Liaison Unit has a variety of responsibilities which includes the timely review and distribution of police reports to Units within the Bureau of Investigations. In conjunction with the District Attorney’s Office, Case Management investigators seek criminal complaints for the majority of the initiated reports pertaining to criminal offenses.
The Court Liaison Unit itself is a recipient of approximately 22% of all assigned cases. Such cases include felony and misdemeanor violations (including narcotics and general crimes), Driving Under the Influence, Public Intoxication, and in-custody hit and run traffic accidents.

Witness Coordination
Witness Coordination is responsible for coordinating Criminal and Traffic Court appearances by San Jose Police Officers and civilian witnesses through the dissemination of subpoenas and notices.
Additionally, Witness Coordination assists numerous callers with queries regarding pending court appearances, while serving as a liaison to the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office, Santa Clara County Traffic Court, Out of County Agencies, San Jose City Attorney’s Office and Private Attorney/Law firms.

Property Clearance
The Court Liaison Property Officer is involved with:
- The Property and Evidence Unit in maintaining the chain of custody of evidence
- Processing evidence via the Santa Clara County Crime Lab
- The release or destruction of firearms/contraband per court ordered requests
- Property release for cleared Court Liaison assigned cases
