High Technology Crimes Unit
The San Jose Police Department’s High Technology Crimes Unit is a covert unit designed to investigate High Technology related crimes with the ability to perform computer forensic examinations. Originally formed in 1986, the High Technology Crimes Unit enjoys the distinct reputation of being one of the first investigative units of its type which is solely dedicated to the investigation of computer related crime. It also has a close working relationship with local, state, and federal agencies as well as private industry in Silicon Valley.
The High Technology Unit currently consists of one lieutenant, one sergeant and five officers.
Additionally, the High Technology Crimes Unit has two sergeants that are each assigned to one of two regional task forces:
- The Rapid Enforcement Allied Computer Team (R.E.A.C.T.) Task Force.
- The F.B.I. Silicon Valley Regional Computer Forensics Lab (S.V.R.C.F.L.).
High Technology Crimes Unit Duties and Responsibilities
The High Technology Crimes Unit investigates crimes and performs functions that include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Internet Identity Theft
- Computer Forensic Examinations
- Trade Secrets/Intellectual Property
- Internet Fraud
- Network Intrusions
- Provides assistance to other local, state and federal agencies.
- Informs and educates community groups, private industry, and educational institutions on High Technology crimes and prevention.
- Receives and investigates Internet Fraud Complaint Center (IFCC) complaints.
