Position Summary: The Public Safety Radio Dispatch Trainee Position (PSRD) is a non-sworn classification and under general supervision, performs work of moderate difficulty in dispatching police personnel, and performs related work as required. PSRD’s are required to handle the full range of telephone answering and dispatch functions.
Typical Duties:
- Learning to dispatch police on both routine and emergency calls utilizing the computer aided dispatch system, video display terminals, radio dispatching consoles, and related equipment.
- Answering the telephone and receiving emergency, non-emergency, and 9-1-1 requests for assistance.
- Inquiring, interpreting, verifying, receiving, and disseminating information from law enforcement computer networks relating to wanted persons, stolen property, vehicle registration, etc.
- Participating in field training exercises as needed to fully develop dispatching skills.
- Performing all related learning and testing activities.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Education: Completion of high school, General Educational Development (GED) certificate, or California Proficiency Certificate.
- Experience: One (1) year of experience receiving, processing and/or dispatching calls in a
radio dispatch or call center OR successful completion of high school and three (3) years of experience working in public contact employment. - Employment Eligibility: Federal law requires all employees to provide verification of their eligibility to work in this country. Please be informed that the City of San Jose will not prepare or file a labor condition application with the Department of Labor.
- Passing a San Jose Police Department background check is a condition of employment.
Examination: The selection process will consist of an evaluation of the applicant’s training and experience based on the application, resume and answers to the job-specific questions and Peace Officer Standardized and Training (POST) Public Safety Dispatcher examination T-score of 55 or higher and the following:
- The Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) for Public Safety Dispatcher examination is offered at The Academy at South Bay Regional Public Safety Training Consortium in San Jose. The POST exam is also offered at other academies throughout the state of California.
If you have already taken the POST somewhere else, the City of San Jose will accept T-scores of 55 and higher. The test score results must be on the agency letterhead where the test was taken. The POST must have been taken within the last 12 months (June 1, 2011-June 1, 2012). - Practical examination (Criticall)
- Oral Board Interview
- A Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ)
Candidates: Only those candidates whose backgrounds best match the position, pass a Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ), pass the Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) written exam with a T-score of 55 or higher may be forwarded to the next phase, which is the computer practical examination (Criticall)

Working Conditions:Work is performed in a structured and sometimes stressful work environment that includes structured breaks and lunch schedules. Incumbents are required to wear a uniform and work various shifts including nights, weekends and holidays; overtime may be required including last minute shift extensions.
