Dave Knopf

Chief Dave Knopf was hired by the San Jose Police Department in February of 1992, after spending 4 years with the Morgan Hill Police Department. He worked the Bureau of Field Operations (BFO) – Patrol, and was then selected to work in the Special Operations Division – Violent Crimes Enforcement Team (VCET). After working VCET, he was selected to the Bureau of Investigations – Homicide Unit. After a tour in Homicide, he then returned to Patrol as a Field Training Officer until his promotion to Sergeant in September 2001.

As a Sergeant, he worked as a Patrol supervisor in the Foothill and Southern Divisions, returned for a second tour as a Homicide Unit investigator, and was assigned as an investigator in the Internal Affairs Unit.

Dave was promoted to Lieutenant in January of 2008. He worked as a Patrol Watch Commander, commanded the Systems Development Unit and the Special Investigations Unit – Intelligence/Vice. Dave was promoted to the rank of Captain in February of 2012, and served as the BFO Patrol, Central Division Commander and the BFO Administrative Unit Commander.

In January of 2013, Captain Knopf was designated as Acting Deputy Chief for the Bureau of Administration. In February 2014, Dave was promoted to the rank of Deputy Chief in command of the Bureau of Administration.  In February, 2015 Deputy Chief Knopf was assigned to command the Bureau of Field Operations.

On January 19th, 2016 Dave assumed the role of Assistant Chief.
