My Neighborhood Update FAQs

What does CAD stand for? CAD stands for Computer Aided Dispatch. CAD is a highly specialized application that allows for the coordinated communication, assignment and tracking of Police Department resources in response to calls-for-service.

What is the My Neighborhood Update Application? My Neighborhood Update is a web-based, CAD reporting application that takes advantage of San Jose Police CAD data and a customized mapping interface that allows for user-guided reporting. CAD reports can be viewed based on area or date spans determined by the user.

What type of data from CAD is used in My Neighborhood Update? Select calls-for-service data is utilized for My Neighborhood Update (depending on the type of report), including: Date, Time, Location, Call Type, Event Number, Entry Date & Time, and Final Call Disposition. It is important to note that there may be multiple calls for a single incident in the CAD system. Also, keep in mind that CAD calls-for-service do not always equate to a criminal incident resulting in a report or arrest.

What is a BBB? BBB stands for Beat Building Block. A BBB is the smallest police patrol service area. Bureau of Field Operations (BFO) patrol service areas are utilized for resource deployment throughout the City. San Jose Police has 4 patrol divisions (plus San Jose Airport), 16 patrol districts, 83 patrol beats and 357 patrol BBBs. Patrol BBBs taken together comprise larger patrol beats. Similarly, patrol beats taken together comprise patrol districts. Finally, patrol districts taken together comprise patrol divisions. To view a citywide map of all BBB's, please click here.

What is the size of a BBB? BBB size varies, with larger BBBs along the City boundary and smaller BBBs near the center of the City. In some areas of the City, BBB size approximates Census Tracts, while in other areas BBBs are much larger.

Why were BBB's selected as the basis to report CAD data? San Jose Police respond to calls-for-service spanning an expansive 177 square mile jurisdiction. Beat Building Blocks (BBBs) are the smallest police patrol service area and allow for complete jurisdictional coverage in CAD based calls-for-service reports.

Why can't I find my address? This may be due in part to the geofile that is used to plot locations on the map based on user input. If addresses are entered incorrectly, or if the geofile doesn't contain the correct reference data, select addresses may not be depicted on the map. If this occurs, please refer to the address correction dialogue box in the My Neighborhood Update application before re-keying the address and/or inputting a nearby intersection.

What types of reports are available in My Neighborhood Update? There are seven (7) types of My Neighborhood Update reports.  Users can view agency-wide call type reports (last week or last 12 months) or, based on an address or intersection of interest, area-specific (BBB) call type and call profile reports (last week or last 12 months), as well as the recently added (8/1/2007) event detail listing for the last 90 days report.

What types of data are included in the “Event Detail Listing for the Last 90 Days” report? Users can view select data pertaining to CAD events including: event numbers, dates and times, locations, and final call dispositions. Event details are listed by event type groupings, for example, Assault, Burglary, Community Policing, etc. The report will run automatically every night and provide information for the most recent ninety (90) days to date (as determined by midnight for prior evening).

How do I understand the data fields included in the Event Detail Listing for the Last 90 Days?

  • Event Number: Electronically generated by the Police Department’s CAD system, this number catalogues an event reported to the Police Department. The Event number consists of 10 characters (1 alpha and 9 numeric). In the following example event number, P070731041, P= Police, 07= year, 073= Julian Date (73rd day of the year), 1041= event number
  • Entry Date & Time: This is the date and time that the event was entered into the Police Department’s CAD system.  In the following example, 2007-03-14 19:34:20, the event was entered on March 14, 2007 at 7:34:20 PM (note: the time is expressed in 24-hour format).
  • Location: This is the event location. Address information has been changed to reflect the 100th block and intersection information is unchanged.  Some location fields will be populated with “UNRECOGNIZED” if the data was not recorded in a consistent convention.
  • Final Disposition: The final event status is designated with one of the following final call dispositions:

How can I use the data from My Neighborhood Update in support of community safety goals? Data from My Neighborhood Update should be reviewed and used to improve community safety. My Neighborhood Update data is appropriate to consider and discuss as part of coordinated crime prevention initiatives. You are encouraged to continue partnering and problem-solving with our police officers while using My Neighborhood Update data toward shared police-community goals. Can I review CAD data for more than one BBB? CAD data can be reviewed for as many BBBs and/or date spans as you like, as often as you like. Options include reviewing the data week by week, area by area (BBB) using address or nearby intersection, or citywide.

Should I compare data across different BBB's? The San Jose Police Department does not encourage the comparison of calls-for-service data from one BBB to another BBB given the complex mix of potential factors that influence calls-for-service (e.g., high density residential, commercial and/or industrial units, major roadways, etc.).

Is every CAD call type included in the My Neighborhood Update application? Not every CAD call type is included in the My Neighborhood Update application. Community-based calls-for-service call types are included within My Neighborhood Update. Note: Reports submitted online (TRAC), faxed or mailed are not included in My Neighborhood Update.

Why was CAD chosen as the data source for the community access application? While most agencies furnish data to the public for only those select incidents in which a report was created or an arrest was made, My Neighborhood Update offers a broader view of police-community contacts from calls-for-service, including less serious quality of life call types. It is important to note that there may be multiple calls for a single incident in the CAD system (as compared to official crime statistics whereby each count represents one incident; please click here to visit the crime data page). Also, please keep in mind that CAD calls-for-service do not always equate to a criminal incident resulting in a report or arrest.

How often is data updated in the CADmine Public Access application? My Neighborhood Update data is updated once weekly for the weekly and annual reports (call type and call profile), whether citywide or within a particular BBB. The recently added Event Detail Listing for Last 90 Days report is updated on daily basis for the most recent 90 days-to-date.

How do I get back to sjpd.org from the My Neighborhood Update site? To navigate back to sjpd.org from My Neighborhood Update, simply click on the web browser's “back” button until the desired location has been reached.

Are there any issues I should keep in mind when checking My Neighborhood Update data? My Neighborhood Update reports detail Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) calls for service data. CAD call-type data is NOT the same as reported crime data. For official crime statistics, please refer to the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program and related data for San Jose by clicking here to visit the crime data page. There may be more than one call for service for any given incident within these reports (e.g., several observers may call 911 after witnessing a motor vehicle accident, disturbance or serious criminal incident). Some call types (e.g., murder, kidnapping, robbery) may include "courtesy call" information from other law enforcement agencies (e.g., a call detailing information pertaining to a homicide suspect from another jurisdiction may be received locally and added to the "murder" call type). Finally, CAD calls-for-service do not always equate to a criminal incident resulting in a report or arrest, with many calls relating to non-criminal or quality of life issues.
