Q — Can I lateral from a law enforcement agency outside of California?
A — No. Officers from other states cannot lateral to San Jose PD. They can however apply as an entry level applicant.
Q — I completed the online PHQ and my results were that I was disqualified. Who can I speak to about my PHQ results?
A — If you have questions about PHQ results or background issues, please call the Background Investigation Unit at 408-277-4131.
Q — Is there anything I can do to help me prepare for the examinations?
A — While San Jose PD does not offer any written testing study material, you can visit the California P.O.S.T. website at http://www.post.ca.gov/publications/PDF/poWrittenPracticeTest.pdf which provides a study guide for the P.O.S.T. test. Q — Can other law enforcement, military, or work experience be used in lieu of the college credit requirement?
A — Unfortunately, at this time it cannot be used in lieu of the college unit requirement. We do recommend that you have your training records evaluated by a credentialing service for college credit conversion.
Q — Do you have testing available for people who live out of the state of California?
A — Yes. Applicants who live more than three (3) hours away from San Jose will be able to attend our “all-in-one” test weekend. An applicant can sign-up at www.joinsjpdblue.com and take the PHQ, Physical Agility, Written, and Oral Board Interview test in one weekend.
Q — I attended a trade / vocational college. Are my credits from these institutions acceptable?
A — Credits earned from colleges, universities and institutions listed in the most recent edition of the reference book, “Accredited Institutions of Post Secondary Education” are acceptable to meet the educational requirement.
Q — What do I need to know about the Police Academy?
A — The Police Academy is at least 40 hours a week and approx. six months long. As a San Jose Police Recruit, you will receive a salary plus medical and dental benefits. It is not a “live-in” academy.
