Testing Information

PREREQUISITES TO APPLICATION:

The San Jose Police Department accepts California P.O.S.T. Entry-Level Law Enforcement Test Battery (PELLETB), also known as the P.O.S.T. Reading and Writing Test.  The PELLETB is offered at The Academy at South Bay Regional Public Safety Training Consortium in San Jose http://www.theacademy.ca.gov/.  The PELLETB is also offered at other academies throughout the state of California.  If you have already taken the PELLETB somewhere else, the San Jose Police Department will accept T-scores 50 and higher.

The Academy at South Bay Regional Public Safety Training Consortium also conducts the Work Sample Test Battery (WSTB) also known as the physical agility test and the 1.5 mile run. The WSTB is a standard specific to the San Jose Police Department and varies among other police departments and California police academies.  Most of the time, WSTB scores elsewhere are not accepted.  For local recruit and lateral applicants, we recommend taking the WSTB at The Academy at South Bay Regional.  The WSTB will also be offered during the out of area test weekend for out of area recruit and lateral applicants.  Passing T-scores and 1.5 mile run are eligible for one year.  If you do not obtain passing T-scores you may retake any of the three (3) tests in 30 days.

For more information about The Academy at South Bay Regional Public Safety Training Consortium, and their location, visit their website at http://www.theacademy.ca.gov/

To view the dates available for prerequisite testing at The Academy at South Bay Regional, visit http://www.theacademy.ca.gov//.

The prerequisite tests are part of the minimum requirements to begin the selection process.  We recommend that you also review the rest of the minimum requirements before taking the prerequisite tests.

SELECTION PROCESS:

Once you have completed the prerequisite tests and have obtained passing scores, we encourage you to submit your application online at www.joinsjpdblue.com

Please check our calendar for dates on upcoming Pre-Test Seminars, Oral interviews and other recruiting events.

OUT OF AREA / OUT OF STATE APPLICANTS:

Police Recruit and Lateral Police applicants are offered “all-in-one” weekend testing for those that live three (3) or more hours away from San Jose.  On that weekend, you will be able to complete the written test (PELLETB), physical agility tests (WTSB, 1.5 mile run), the PHQ and the Oral Board Interview Test on Saturday and Sunday.  Due to the nature of condensed testing, prerequisite testing is not part of the minimum requirements before application since these tests will be done all on one weekend.  Out of area Police Recruit applicants however, will be held to PELLETB T-score of 50 or higher, WTSB T-score of 320 or higher, and passing the 1.5 mile run. Out of area Lateral Police applicants will be held to WTSB T-score of 384 or higher, and passing the 1.5 mile run.
