Reserve Unit – The Department

The San José Police Department was founded in 1849 with 14 sworn Peace Officers. Currently, the department exceeds 1500 full-time sworn Peace Officers and over 160 sworn Reserve Peace Officers. The Department serves the third largest City and Agency in Northern California.

The San José Police Department is responsible for the safety and protection of the residents of San José. The 177.7 square mile city is divided into 16 patrol districts and 84 beats.  In addition to patrol duty, the San José Police Department has 150 specialized units, which offer the career minded professional unparalleled opportunities for growth with one of the most progressive police departments in the nation.
