Suspect Jonathan Wilbanks
San Jose:The San Jose Police Department is asking for the public's help in identifying and locating a suspect involved in a recent crime spree in San Jose that included four armed robberies, a homicide, and the attempted murder of two San Jose Police Officers.
On Friday, November 16th, 2012, Suspect Jonathan Wilbanks and a second unknown suspect committed four armed robberies throughout the day. In each of the robberies, the suspects brandished firearms and demanded money. At 7:25 P.M., the suspects robbed a Little Caesar's Pizza restaurant in the 2800 block of Story Rd. At 7:40 P.M., the suspects robbed a gas station in the 1000 block of E. Capitol Expressway. At 8:43 P.M. the suspects robbed a Jack in the Box restaurant in the 600 block of Curtner Ave. At 8:58 P.M. the suspects robbed a spa in the 1400 block of Bird Ave. At 9:01 P.M., the suspects attempted to carjack Victim Rory Parkpettiford in the parking lot of a 7-11 store in the 400 block of S. Kiely Blvd. The victim was shot during the attempt and was later pronounced dead at the scene.
At 9:13 P.M. on Friday night, Victim Officer #1, who had been given a description of the suspect vehicle, spotted the vehicle on Highway 280 near Highway 101. The officer followed the suspect vehicle to the area of Tully Rd. / Lanai Ave. while waiting for additional officers. The officer came to a stop several car lenghts behind the suspect vehicle at a red light when the suspects, without warning, exited the vehicle and began shooting at the officer who was still seated in his patrol car. Ofc. Barthelemy, who was also stopped at the intersection, returned fire at the suspects striking one of them. Both suspects got back into their car and fled. Ofc. Barthelemy and Victim Ofc. #2, despite being hit by gunfire, pursued the suspects and were eventually joined by additional officers. During the pursuit, the suspects again shot at pursuing officers. At one point during the pursuit, the passenger suspect fled the vehicle on foot while the driver suspect continued to flee in the vehicle.
Both officers again pursued the suspect vehicle until it crashed on Cunningham Ave. on the west side of Reid Hillview Airport. The suspect again fled on foot and eventually entered a random residence through a back door. The occupants of the residence alerted officers to the suspect's location. Special Operations personnel including MERGE and METRO officers surrounded the residence and later took the suspect into custody without incident. The suspect had two non-life threatening gunshot wounds when officers arrested him.
The injured officer was treated at Regional Medical Center for two gunshot wounds and released. Both officers involved have been placed on routine paid administrative leave. The San Jose Police Department's Homicide Unit has determined that Suspect Jonathan Wilbanks and the second unknown suspect were responsible for all four armed robberies, the S. Kiely homicide, and the attempted murder of the two police officers. Suspect Wilbanks was booked into jail for murder, two counts of attempted murder, four counts of robbery, burglary and auto theft. The whereabouts of the second suspect are not known.
Persons with information regarding the above incidents are urged to contact Detective Sergeant Craig Storlie of the San Jose Police Department's Homicide Unit at (408)277-5283.
