photo of officer wearing a body cameraSan Jose, CA - The San Jose Police Department is committed to outfitting its officers with body-worn cameras (BWC). In January 2014, the Department formed the BWC Committee, consisting of community members, Department members and the police union.  The BWC Committee recently completed the first draft of the BWC Policy. The policy underwent many revisions and resulted from research as well as internal and external feedback and discussion. The policy is comprehensive and addresses the privacy of both officers and individuals.

Ongoing feedback will help shape future revisions of the BWC policy. The BWC Field Test will begin on July 20th and run through October of this year. Fifteen (15) officers volunteered to field test and evaluate three (3) types of camera systems. The cameras represent different features available on the market as well as different evidence management systems.

The Department will continue to update the web page with project milestones, policy changes as well as relative legislation that affects the program.

To increase your awareness of body cameras, please review the BWC resources and provide feedback via our surveys.
