San Jose, Calif. — Friday, February 16, 2018, is the 50th Anniversary of America’s first 9-1-1 phone call. Please join San Jose Police Chief Eddie Garcia and San Jose Acting Fire Chief Robert Sapien as they thank the San Jose call-takers and dispatchers who respond to the City’s emergency 9-1-1 calls.

San Jose call-takers answer 565,000 emergency calls each year and 380,000 non-emergency calls. Communications personnel are the real-time connection between the caller and police officers and firefighters working in the field. San Jose has openings in both police and fire communications.

Note: 9-1-1 was selected as the nationwide emergency number in 1968. The nation’s first 9-1-1 call was placed on February 16, 1968, in Haleyville, Alabama. California began developing 9-1-1 soon after with the statewide system officially launched in 1972. The statewide system was completed in 1985.
