San Jose, Calif. — On Monday, October 22, 2018, between 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM, Chief Eddie Garcia joined by Mayor Sam Liccardo, will unveil "Operation Frozen Treats Patrol," a San Jose Police Department branded ice cream truck, to over 200 kids at the Boys & Girls Club of Silicon Valley, playground of Escuela Popular, 149 N. White Rd. in San Jose. 

Operation Frozen Treats Patrol is an ice cream truck operated by the San Jose Police Department's Crime Prevention Unit to create positive community engagement opportunities and strengthen community relations between police and residents.  The truck will allow the department to continue building relationships through nonenforcement interactions between officers, youth, and other community members.

The ice cream truck program will provide free ice cream at predetermined locations, such as neighborhood parks, recreation centers, schools, and community sponsored events.  

The ice cream truck is a modified 2017 Ford Transit Diesel truck built by Farber Specialty Vehicles in Columbus, Ohio.  It includes a side window to serve ice cream, speaker microphone system for announcements, siren, police lights on the two front visors, 1 deep freezer that can hold up to 1,200 packaged ice cream bars, a bay sink with hot and cold water to wash hands and clean surfaces area, cabinets to store supplies, small counter space, awning, and an exterior graphic wrap.

Fallen San Jose police officer Michael J. Katherman is being honored on the ice cream truck due to his love of ice cream and his service to the residents of San Jose.

Operation Frozen Treats Patrol was inspired by the Boston (MA) Police Department and St. Louis (MO) Police Department successful ice cream truck programs.
