San Jose, CA - On Tuesday, June 16, 2020, the Shop with a Cop Foundation of Silicon Valley (SWACF), along with local law enforcement, community volunteers, San Jose Sharks Foundation, and ABC7 News will be at McKinley Elementary School in San Jose distributing reading books, gifts, and food kits (each food kit feeds a family of 4 for one week) to over 300 students. To date, through a generous donation from ABC7/Disney and the Magic of Storytelling, the non-profit has distributed over 5000 books to local children in need.

The SWACF mission is to foster better relations between the police and the community. This is a confusing time for youngsters. All of us at SWACF hope these resources will send a clear message to children that although they may feel isolated, there are people who are thinking of them and who continue to look out for them.

Keeping minds sharp during such a long break from school is vital to prevent a backward slide in literacy and critical thinking skills. By doing this, we are providing food for the mind and helping to ensure children continue to read while isolating at home. Staff and parents have been extremely grateful to receive Shop with a Cop’s literary treasure. Darrell Cortez, Executive Director of SWACF said, "We are pleased to participate in providing students with these wonderful books. Our local police officers want to help. We need to show police officers in a positive light. SWACF is about calming fears and building trust in the community."

We are hoping to make these resources available to other local elementary schools. People wishing to make a tax deductible donation to help other children can mail checks or money orders to: Shop with a Cop Foundation of Silicon Valley, P.O. Box 8003, San Jose, CA 95155. Please make checks payable to Shop with a Cop Foundation SV or via PayPal at www.shopwithacopsv.org.
