Out of Area / Out of State Applicants

The San Jose Police Department offers “All-in-One” weekend of testing for out-of-area / state applicants who live THREE (3) OR MORE HOURS from the City of San Jose or are active military personnel. “All-in-One” weekend of testing will allow eligible applicants to complete all testing phases applicable to the position they are applying for, in one trip. “All-in-One” weekend of testing for out-of-area/state has been scheduled for the following dates:

Note: A total of three (3) trips to the City of San Jose are required in the following stages:

  • Testing Stage: Written Test, Physical Agility and 1.5 mile Test, Oral Board Exam
  • Background Inquiry Stage: Polygraph Exam, Psychological Written and Oral Exam
  • Conditional Job Offer Stage: City of San Jose medical exam


The following is the process for out-of-area, out-of-state, Police Recruit, Lateral, Academy Attendee or Graduate applicants.

If your application is accepted, you will automatically be grouped into the “All-in-One” weekend of testing.



The PHQ is a pre-screen questionnaire about you. Upon receiving and acceptance of test results, we will email you the website address to take the on-line PHQ. We receive your results of your PHQ generally seven business days after you complete it. After passing the PHQ we will schedule you for your Oral Board Exam. Those screened-out from the PHQ will be notified as to how they may contact a Background Investigator to discuss the results.



Upon passing the PHQ we will email you a website link to register for the California P.O.S.T. PELLETB, written test (recruit applicants only), and the WSTB, physical agility test and 1.5 mile run (testing fees may apply). You will also be able to register for your Oral Board Exam. Typically, a designated “All-in-One” weekend consist of the following schedule:

  • Saturday: 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. PELLETB, 1.5 mile run then WSTB testing
  • Sunday: 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Oral Board Testing (scheduled appointment)

PLEASE NOTE: Applicants who fail the 1.5 mile run or the WSTB on the designated Saturday of an “All-in-One” weekend will be disqualified from taking the Oral Board Exam the following day. For more information about the WSTB course, please click here.

The Oral Board Exam is a panel interview of five to eight questions not necessarily police related that generally takes approximately 30 minutes. Applicants who successfully pass the Oral Board Exam will be placed on an eligibility list for the Background Investigation Process.



Out-of-area / state applicants who move forward to the Background Investigation Process will have the Personal History Statement (PHS) or background packet mailed to their home address. Included in the background packet are instructions to complete your PHS. Once you complete your PHS and have submitted it, you will then be assigned a Background Investigator. Once your background inquiry is complete, it will then be reviewed by the hiring board for employment selection. Those selected will be given a conditional offer of employment contingent upon successfully passing the city medical exam. Successful completion of the city medical exam, applicants will be given notice of their start day for the San Jose Police Academy.



Police Recruits are considered a City of San Jose employee and will attend The San Jose Police Academy, earning $32.19 an hour. The academy is a 24 week program with approximately 1120 hours of training. The training is conducted during the weekdays from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm with some training conducted after hours and on weekends. The academy is not a “live-in” academy and Police Recruit Officers will be required to find their own living arrangements and daily transportation. Upon graduating from the San Jose Police Academy, recruit officers will then enter the Field Training Program.



The Field Training Officer (FTO) program is the “street” training for officers just graduating from the academy. This is a period where newly graduated Police Recruit Officers will take what they learned in the academy and apply it to the street. For Lateral Police Officers this is a period of preparation, training transition and integration into the San Jose Police Department. New officers in the FTO program will be assigned to experienced, San Jose Field Training Officers for a 17 week training period. Those who successfully complete the Field Training Program are assigned to the Patrol Division as a solo beat officer. All officers, in their first three years of service as a San Jose Police Officer, must be assigned to the Patrol Division. After the three year period, an officer is eligible to test for a specialized unit or take the promotional exam for the rank of sergeant.
