Identity Theft

Identity Theft

There are three types of identity theft that are responsible for the majority of reported impersonations: Financial Fraud, which usually involves a fraudulent use of the victim's credit; Evasion of Due Process, which is usually done to avoid a traffic or criminal court charge; and Immigration Fraud, which is an impersonation of a U.S. citizen in order to avoid laws which prohibit the employment of undocumented workers.

All are crimes that can be reported and investigated by the police. The burden for correcting the damage to your identity, however depends on the type of impersonation involved. The police can correct issues involving the criminal justice system, however, the rehabilitation of one's credit can only be done by the victim.
