Identity Theft

ATM cards: If your ATM card has been stolen or compromised, get a new card, account number and PIN. Do not use your old PIN. When creating a PIN, don't use a common number like the last four digits of the social security number or your birth date.

Fraudulent change of address: Notify the local Postal Inspector if you suspect someone has filed a change of address with the post office or has used the mail to commit credit or bank fraud. ( Call your local Postmaster to obtain the phone number ). Notify the local Postmaster for that address to forward all mail in your name to your own address.

Social Security number fraud: Call the Social Security Administration to report fraudulent use of your Social Security number. As a last resort, you might want to change your number. The SSA will only change it if you fit their fraud victim criteria. Also order a copy of your Earnings and Benefits Statement and check it for accuracy.

Phone service: If your long distance calling card has been stolen or you discover fraudulent charges on your bill, cancel the account and open a new one. Notify the phone company of the fraud. Provide a password which must be used any time the account is changed.

Drivers License fraud: If you believe that some one is using your drivers license number to cash bad checks or avoid court actions, you may need to get a new number. Contact DMV Investigations office to see if another license was issued in your name and to begin an investigation of the misuse of your number. Put a flag on your license indicating the possible impersonation. The DMV investigator can also determine if you qualify for a new drivers license number.
