On July 13, 2024, at approximately 4:38 a.m., San José Police Department Patrol Officers responded to a report of a suspicious circumstance at a recycling facility located in the 600 block of Charles Street. An employee called police to report finding a possibly deceased female in the processing area of the facility. At the time of the investigation, a meticulous search for missing 3 year old Ellie Obi Lorenzo was being investigated by the Fremont Police Department. When Officers arrived, they located a deceased 3 year old female victim who matched the description of Ellie.
On July 15, 2024, the Santa Clara County Coroner's Office positively identified the victim as Ellie. The cause and manner of death is still under investigation and will be determined by the Coroner's Office pending a medical examination. The SJPD Homicide Unit has been diligently investigating the circumstances of Ellie's death since being notified of her appearance at the recycling facility. Although the investigation remains ongoing, Detectives have uncovered the following preliminary information:
Ellie was last seen alive with her father, suspect Jared Lorenzo, at a residence in the city of Fremont on the evening of July 11, 2024. Detectives learned that suspect Lorenzo and Ellie then drove to suspect Lorenzo's apartment in the city of Fremont. On July 12, 2024, Detectives discovered that suspect Lorenzo left his Fremont apartment just after 6:00 a.m. and drove to the city of San José where he removed Ellie's body from the trunk of his vehicle and disposed of her in a trash receptacle. That receptacle was later emptied by the garbage company and unknowingly transferred to the Charles Street facility. Further police evidence suggests that suspect Lorenzo drove to multiple neighboring Bay Area cities and finally stopped in the city of San Francisco, where he was found deceased shortly after 11:00 a.m.
The motive and circumstances are still under investigation.
This incident is being investigated as the city's 19th Homicide of 2024.
