On November 18, 2022, at approximately 2:28 PM, Officers responded to the 600 Block of River Oaks Parkway for a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, Officers located an adult male who was suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Officers and paramedics rendered life saving measures. The victim was transported to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injury and was pronounced deceased. The suspect fled prior to police arrival.
The San José Police Department Homicide Unit responded to the scene and began a comprehensive investigation into the incident. During the course of the investigation, Detectives identified the suspect as Carlos Hernandez Monroy and obtained an arrest warrant. Detectives also determined the suspect had fled to El Salvador following the shooting.
On May 27, 2024, suspect Hernandez Monroy returned to the city of McAllen, Texas where he was arrested by U.S. Customs and Border Protection. On July 22, 2024, the suspect was transported back to the city of San José and subsequently booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail for murder.
The motive and circumstances surrounding the incident are still under investigation.
The identity of the victim will be released by the Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office after confirming the victim’s identity and notifying next of kin.
This was the City's 35th homicide of 2022.
