SJPD Launches New Real-Time ID Theft Resource

In an ongoing effort to enhance public safety and provide timely support for residents, the San José Police Department is proud to announce the launch of a new real-time communication tool aimed at helping individuals who are victims of identity theft. This feature, available on the SJPD website, connects the public to a counselor with the Identity Theft Resource Center, allowing residents to access immediate assistance and expert guidance on managing the complexities of identity theft.

With identity theft affecting millions across the country each year, this new service offers a critical lifeline for those navigating the overwhelming process of securing their personal information and seeking available resources. According to recent reports from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), identity theft continues to be one of the most prevalent crimes nationwide, with one million incidents reported in 2023 alone. As digital transactions and online interactions increase, so do the opportunities for cybercriminals to exploit personal information, leaving victims to deal with the far-reaching effects of fraud.

“We understand the stress and frustration that can come with being a victim of identity theft,” said SJPD Deputy Chief Brian Spears. “With this new chat feature, we are providing a direct line to knowledgeable support, helping victims access valuable resources and understand their next steps. This tool enhances our commitment to protecting the public and ensuring that everyone has the support they need.”

“As tools used to steal identities grow more sophisticated, we are following suit by creating a more sophisticated response,” said San José Mayor Matt Mahan. “Our police department is stepping up with expert support and accessible resources to help victims reclaim their lives and ease the impact of identity theft.”

"Crimes involving identity theft not only strip you of your most secured information but also your sense of safety and privacy," stated San José City Manager Jennifer Maguire. "This additional resource tool can help to relieve an already stressful situation for victims so they can focus on rebuilding their sense of security."

The newly added feature to the Identity Theft Resource Center allows residents to connect with specialists in real time. Whether they need assistance in reporting fraudulent activity, advice on restoring their identity, or guidance on preventative measures, the service is designed to offer help quickly and effectively. Users can access the tool via the Department's website or through the Identity Theft Resource Center’s dedicated platform.

This initiative aligns with the Department’s ongoing efforts to improve service delivery, making it easier for residents to receive the information and support they need while ensuring the continued safety and security of the community. Despite ongoing challenges in managing service demands, the Department remains committed to utilizing technology to better serve the public and offer innovative solutions.
