On February 25, 2025 at approximately 8:52 PM, San José Police Department Patrol Officers responded to a report of an assault that occurred at a business in the 1000 block of East Capitol Expressway. The preliminary investigation revealed that three male gang members confronted a juvenile male victim outside the business. Eventually, the suspects and victim went inside where a physical altercation ensued. The victim was violently assaulted to the point of unconsciousness, at which point the suspects continued to assault the victim. The suspects fled the scene prior to police arrival.
The victim sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital where he was placed in a medically induced coma for weeks.
SJPD Gang Investigations Unit Detectives began a comprehensive investigation and identified the suspects as Joshua Velasco and two male suspects who were 17 years old at the time of the assault. GIU Detectives obtained arrest warrants for all three suspects and search warrants for their respective residences.
On June 25, 2025, Suspect Velasco and one of the male suspects were located and arrested in the city of San Jose. The third male suspect was arrested in the city of Gilroy. During the execution of the search warrants in the city of San Jose, Detectives located gang indicia and evidence related to the crime. One suspect was booked into Santa Clara County Juvenile Hall, and the other two were booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail, all for attempted murder.
