On January 10, 2026, at approximately 2:52 PM, Officers responded to a report of a person shot inside of a business located in the 3000 block of Story Road. Upon arrival, Officers located an adult male victim inside the business suffering from at least one gunshot wound. The victim was transported to a local hospital where his injuries were later determined to be non-life threatening. The preliminary investigation revealed the male suspect had a brief interaction with the victim, before firing at least one round at him. The suspect fled the scene in a vehicle prior to police arrival. Officers located a privately manufactured firearm and a loaded extended magazine at the scene.

Officers from the Violent Crimes Enforcement Team (VCET) responded to the scene and, utilizing Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) cameras, identified the suspect vehicle. Gang Investigations Unit (GIU) Detectives, with the assistance of analysts from our Real Time Intelligence Center (RTIC), immediately began utilizing FUSUS technology to track and locate the suspect vehicle. Officers located the vehicle unoccupied and subsequently identified a seventeen year old suspect associated to the vehicle who was responsible for this incident.

GIU Detectives obtained an arrest warrant and search warrant for the suspect and his associated residence.

On January 14, 2026, GIU Detectives with the assistance of the Covert Response Unit, located and apprehended the juvenile suspect in the city of Stockton. During the search of the suspect's residence, Detectives located evidence related to the crime. The suspect was later transported to Santa Clara County Juvenile Hall for multiple crimes including attempted murder.

“This case highlights the serious dangers of gang-related violence involving our youth,” said San José Police Chief Paul Joseph. “The Department has time and again demonstrated how critical modern technology, such as ALPR cameras and FUSUS, are in helping our officers quickly identify, locate, and apprehend dangerous criminals. I am grateful for our officers’ swift and effective response in combating gang violence.”

“This is a grim reminder of how early gangs can pull young people into violent crime — and why we need earlier intervention to keep kids from being exploited, along with state laws that reflect the reality of modern crime,” said San José Mayor Matt Mahan. “I’m grateful the victim survived, and that our police department’s fast, coordinated response — using tools like automatic license plate readers and our real-time intelligence center — prevented further tragedy.”

"San José continues to be one of the safest cities due to the dedication of our officers and detectives who prioritize public safety," said San José City Manager Jennifer Maguire. "Whether you are in the comfort of your home, walking in your neighborhood, shopping, working, or visiting, everyone deserves to be safe and I commend our San José Police Department for making sure that is achieved."
