On January 29, 2026, at approximately 2:44 a.m., Officers responded to a report of a suspicious circumstance that occurred in a neighborhood located in the east side of San José. The preliminary investigation revealed unknown suspects had concealed a camouflaged camera in the bushes outside a residence. The suspects then fled the scene and the camera was later discovered by the homeowner. Upon arrival, Officers collected the camera, which was attached to a power bank and positioned facing the residence. It is believed the camera was used to monitor the occupants of the residence in preparation for a burglary or other criminal activity. The suspects remain outstanding.

SJPD Burglary Unit Detectives immediately began a comprehensive investigation into the incident. During the course of the investigation, Detectives located a second camouflaged device near the area of where the first camera was located. The second device was believed to be a Wi-Fi powered device (pictured below).

The San José Police Department is advising San José residents of a recent burglary trend. SJPD has received several reports of deceptive tactics used to case unoccupied homes. The suspects plant hidden surveillance devices, or pose as delivery service providers, or landscapers to determine when homes are unoccupied before committing burglaries. As a reminder, remaining vigilant and reporting suspicious activity helps keep our neighborhoods safe.

What to watch out for:

• Small or concealed cameras placed near homes to monitor activity

• Individuals ringing doorbells or posing as delivery drivers to see if anyone answers

• Packages left at doors to test whether a home is vacant

• Unfamiliar vehicles or people repeatedly passing by a residence

What you should do:

• Do not touch suspicious devices if possible

• Be cautious of unexpected visitors or deliveries

• Check your property regularly for unfamiliar devices or objects

• Retrieve packages promptly or ask a neighbor to help when you’re away

• Use outdoor lighting, doorbell cameras, or alarm systems when possible

• Report any suspicious activity or objects immediately to the San José Police Department
