On January 31, 2026, at approximately 2:58 AM, San José Police Department Patrol Officers attempted to make a vehicle enforcement stop on a stolen vehicle in the area of Winchester Boulevard and Moorpark Avenue. The vehicle fled the enforcement stop at a high rate of speed and was involved in a solo vehicle traffic collision. The preliminary investigation revealed the following:

A 2013 gray Infiniti EX37 sedan, occupied by an adult male driver, was traveling north bound on Winchester Boulevard. A marked SJPD patrol unit located the vehicle, which was reported stolen. The vehicle turned east bound onto Moorpark Avenue when Officers attempted to initiate an enforcement stop. The vehicle fled at a high rate of speed at which point officers did not pursue the vehicle. The vehicle continued traveling east bound on Moorpark when it lost control shortly after passing through its intersection with Monroe Street. The vehicle then struck a cement wall at HWY 17 overpass on Moorpark Avenue.

Officers saw the collision from a distance and responded to the driver's aid. The driver was pronounced deceased at the scene.

This incident is the city's 3rd fatal collision and 3rd traffic death of 2026.

The identity of the decedent will be released by the Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner.
