The San Jose Police Department Traffic Investigation Unit is seeking the public's assistance in identifying the suspect vehicle and driver involved in a fatal hit and run collision that occurred on January 25, 2026 between approximately 5:45 PM and 6:05 PM in the area of South Bascom Avenue and Borello Drive.
An adult male pedestrian was crossing the roadway when he was struck by an unknown vehicle. Witnesses described the vehicle as a possibly dark colored sedan with an adult male driver. The driver of the vehicle was described as an adult male between 30-40 years old with a beard, last seen wearing a blue sweatshirt with yellow lettering (believed to be either “SJSU” or “SDU”). The suspect driver briefly approached witnesses on scene before picking up what was believed to be the bumper of his vehicle and fleeing the scene in an unknown direction.

On January 25, 2026, at approximately 6:03 PM, San José Police Department Patrol Officers responded to the area of South Bascom Avenue and Borello Drive for a report of a welfare check of an injured person. During the investigation, Officers determined the injuries were related to a traffic collision.
The preliminary investigation revealed the following:
An unknown vehicle, operated by an unknown driver, was traveling southbound on South Bascom Avenue when it struck an adult male pedestrian walking in the roadway, outside of any marked crosswalk.
The pedestrian was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.
The suspect vehicle fled the scene prior to police arrival.
This incident is the city's 1st fatal collision and 1st traffic death of 2026. This was the also the 1st pedestrian death of 2026.
The identity of the decedent will be released by the Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner.
