Suspect Tyrone Asphy

On February 8, 2026, at approximately 10:50 PM, San José Police Department Patrol Officers responded to a report of a shooting at the intersection of Santa Clara Street and Market Street. The preliminary investigation revealed an altercation occurred between two groups outside of a business. The suspect produced a firearm and shot a total of six adult victims. Four victims were transported to local hospitals for treatment, one victim self-transported to a local hospital, and one victim was treated on scene. All victims were determined to have non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect fled the scene prior to police arrival.

SJPD Gang Investigations Unit Detectives began a comprehensive investigation, and with the assistance of the SJPD Real Time Intelligence Center utilizing Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) technology, Detectives were able to identify the suspect vehicle used to flee the area after the shooting. Detectives later identified the shooter as Tyrone Asphy who was visiting the city of San José for Super Bowl and resided in the state of Washington.

Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Suspect Asphy, along with a search warrant for his associated residence. Working in coordination with the Federal Bureau of Investigation San Francisco and Seattle Field Offices and the Federal Way Police Department in Washington, investigators confirmed the suspect had fled back to Washington state.

On March 11, 2026, with the assistance of Washington's Regional Valley SWAT Team and FBI, Detectives located Suspect Asphy at his residence in the city of Federal Way, Washington, and arrested him. He was booked into King County Jail, where he is awaiting an extradition hearing and expected to be extradited back to Santa Clara County. During the execution of the search warrant at the suspect's residence, Detectives located the firearm used to commit the crime.

The San José Police Department would like to recognize and thank all the agencies involved in the apprehension and arrest of the Super Bowl Sunday shooter: The FBI San Francisco and Seattle Field Offices, Federal Way Police Department, the Washington Regional Valley SWAT Team, the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office, and the King County District Attorney’s Office. This investigation that crossed multiple states and its resolution was made possible thanks to the multi-agency collaboration. The San José Police Department stands by its commitment to holding suspects accountable, regardless of what city or state they live in.

"On a day that should have been a celebration, a dangerous suspect from out of state chose to bring violence into downtown San José and attempted to take multiple lives," said SJPD Chief of Police Paul Joseph. "He fled back to his home state, but fleeing will not put distance between him and the consequences of his actions. Anyone who commits violence in this city should know that the San José Police Department is committed to protecting our community and will relentlessly pursue those responsible until they are held accountable."

“We welcomed nearly half a million people into downtown over Super Bowl week. One of those visitors thought he could endanger lives and run from the consequences — he was wrong,” said San José Mayor Matt Mahan. “Our detectives followed the evidence across state lines and brought him into custody. If anyone comes here to threaten our community, they should expect the same result.”

“I am grateful for the dedication and professionalism of our police officers,” said San José City Manager Jennifer Maguire. “Their swift response that night prevented further violence and likely saved lives.”
