On April 5, 2026, at approximately 1:55 AM, a San José Police Department Sergeant was patrolling the area of Capitol Expressway and Cunningham Avenue when he heard a collision. The Sergeant responded to the area and located a severely damaged vehicle in the roadway. The preliminary investigation revealed the following:
A 2010 Toyota Camry, occupied by a solo adult male driver, was traveling southbound on Capitol Expressway at the intersection of Cunningham Avenue at a high rate of speed when it collided with construction safety barriers in the center median, resulting in the vehicle catching on fire.
The fire was extinguished, and the driver was extricated from the vehicle and pronounced deceased on scene.
This incident is the city’s 11th fatal collision and 11th traffic death of 2026.
The identity of the decedent will be released by the Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner.
