SJPD Arrests Suspects Responsible for Smash and Grab at Local Mall

IN-CUSTODY ARRESTED ARRESTED IN-CUSTODY

On January 11, 2026, at approximately 12:58 PM, San José Police Department Patrol Officers responded to a report of a strong-armed robbery that occurred at a business inside a local mall located in the 2800 block of Stevens Creek Boulevard. Four suspects went inside the business and used a sledgehammer to force entry into secured display cases, taking thousands of dollars’ worth of high-end watches. The suspects fled the scene prior to police arrival. Responding Officers identified two suspect vehicles associated to the strong-armed robbery. Utilizing Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) cameras, Officers were able to track and locate the associated vehicles. One of the vehicles was subsequently located unoccupied in the city of San José, and the other was located unoccupied in the city of Fremont.

San José Police Department Robbery Unit Detectives began an investigation and identified the four adult male suspects: Devin Hairston, Charlie Jones, Emilio Sanchez, and Roman Camarena. During the investigation, Detectives also discovered that Suspect Hairston and Suspect Camarena were involved in a separate armed robbery that took place on December 31, 2025 at a business located in the 3000 block of McKee Road. In this incident, the suspects also used a sledgehammer to force entry into a secured jewelry case, taking several hundred thousand dollars’ worth of jewelry. The suspects fled the scene prior to police arrival.

Detectives obtained arrest warrants for all suspects and search warrants for their associated residences. During the execution of the search warrants, Detectives located possible evidence of the crime.

On January 13, 2026, Suspect Hairston was located and arrested outside the city of Bakersfield by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Orange County Violent Crime Task Force for an unrelated crime. He was subsequently transported and booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail for armed robbery.

On March 18, 2026, with the assistance of the SJPD Covert Response Unit, Suspect Sanchez was located and arrested in the city of Hayward. The suspect was booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail for armed robbery.

On April 14, 2026, with the assistance of the SJPD Covert Response Unit, Suspect Jones was located and arrested in the city of Oakland, and also booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail for armed robbery.

Suspect Camarena was arrested by San Leandro Police Department in Alameda County for an unrelated crime, and is currently awaiting extradition to Santa Clara County.
