The San José Police Department Organized Retail Theft (ORT) Detail began an investigation into a series of retail thefts that occurred in the County of Santa Clara between March 25, 2026 and May 5, 2026. The preliminary investigation revealed that an adult male suspect stole from multiple retail chain stores located in the cities of San José, Cupertino, Sunnyvale, and Santa Clara. In all incidents, the suspect specifically stole large amounts of golf balls. In total, the suspect committed approximately twenty-eight separate thefts, totaling an estimated value of nearly $8,000.

SJPD ORT Investigators began a comprehensive investigation alongside the Santa Clara County High Impact Team and identified the primary suspect as William Yixin Pu. It was also discovered during the investigation that Suspect Pu was reselling the stolen merchandise online. Investigators obtained an arrest warrant for suspect Pu and a search warrant for his associated residence in the city of San José.

On May 6, 2026, with the assistance of the Santa Clara County High Impact Team, SJPD Investigators located and arrested Suspect Pu in the city of San José. While executing the search warrant at his residence, the stolen golf balls, as well as evidence of the crime, were located and seized.
