The San José Police Department began an investigation after receiving several reports of vandalism via the City of San José's 3-1-1 application that occurred between March 13, 2026 and May 1, 2026. The politically motivated graffiti vandalism was found in numerous locations throughout south San José, including City of San José property which was tagged over twenty times. In total, the suspect is believed to be responsible for causing over $12,000 worth of damage.
SJPD Gang Investigations Unit Detectives assigned to the Graffiti Investigation Detail began a comprehensive investigation. With the assistance of Real Time Intelligence Center analysts, Detectives identified the suspect as Joseph Spiciarich. During the course of the investigation, Detectives also discovered the suspect was responsible for several similar vandalism incidents that occurred in January of 2026. Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Suspect Spiciarich and a search warrant for his residence in the city of San José.
On May 13, 2026, with the assistance of SJPD Patrol Officers, Detectives located and apprehended Suspect Spiciarich in the city of San José. During the execution of the search warrant, Detectives seized large amounts of graffiti indicia including spray paint and other evidence related to the crimes.

Suspect Spiciarich was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail for multiple counts of felony vandalism.
