Media Advisory

National Night Out is an annual crime prevention event that promotes community building and police-community partnerships to make neighborhoods safer. National Night Out is sponsored nationally by the National Association of Town Watch and co-sponsored locally by the San José Police Department.

On Tuesday, August 4, 2026, you can generate support for and promote participation in local crime prevention efforts by hosting an event to build positive relationships with the San José Police Department. Join millions across the nation for National Night Out by planning an event with your neighbors!

REGISTRATION IS FREE!
- Plan early, especially if permits for your event are necessary.
- You do not have to be a current Neighborhood Watch group to participate.
- Don’t forget to register by, or before, Sunday, July 12, 2026.

The San José Police Department is a nationally registered participant in this year's event. National Night Out is for everyone! You can register your local event for your neighborhood through the SJPD National Night Out Online Registration Form. Once your neighborhood is registered, we will add your event to our list of National Night Out event sites to visit during the evening. We make every effort to visit as many events as time and circumstances permit. But we can't visit if you do not register!

Please note that some permits have separate and much earlier deadlines:

If your event will be open to the public and food will be served, please contact: County of Santa Clara, Department of Environmental Health, Consumer Protection Division by phone (408) 918-3400 or visit www.EHinfo.org. Department of Environmental Health permit applications must be submitted by Tuesday, July 21, 2026.

However, if you would like DEH to invoice for the permit fees, submit the applications to them by Tuesday, July 14, 2026. Based on review of the application and the menu, DEH may issue an Authorization letter in lieu of the permits for low-risk food distribution (e.g., pre-packaged foods).

If your event will be held at a city park, please contact: City of San Jose, Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services, Special Park Use Unit by phone (408) 794-6500, e-mail SPUapplications@sanjoseca.gov, or visit www.sanjoseca.gov. Park permit applications must be submitted by Sunday, July 12, 2026.

Please note, if you register your NNO event online with SJPD all fees for special park use will be waived. For more information please contact the City of San Jose, Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services, Special Park Use Unit.

If your event will require closing or blocking a public street, please contact: San Jose Police Department, Permits Unit by phone (408) 277-4452, email sjpdpermits@sanjoseca.gov, or visit SJPD Online Permit Applications. In-Person Applications are no longer being accepted. Street Closure (Block Party) permit applications must be submitted by Sunday, July 12, 2026.

Please visit our SJPD National Night Out webpage for details about registration and other event information. For any further questions about your event, contact the Crime Prevention Unit at (408) 277-4133 and speak with any of our National Night Out Planning Team staff members.

Remember this evening is a night to create positive, and long-lasting memories with your neighbors, so just have fun! We look forward to meeting you and your neighbors at your National Night Out event this year!
