On June 27, 2016, at approximately 9:20 PM, San José Police Department Patrol Officers responded to a report of a person shot in the 1700 block of Cape Aston Court in the city of San José. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male victim suffering from at least one gunshot wound. The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene. Preliminary information revealed the victim was traveling in a vehicle when the suspects, who had been lying in wait, ambushed him after he came to a stop. At least one suspect exited a vehicle and shot the victim. The suspects fled the scene prior to police arrival.

SJPD Homicide Unit Detectives responded to the scene and began a comprehensive investigation into the incident. During the investigation, Detectives identified several suspects responsible for the incident. Myung Kim was later identified as one of the primary suspects and was believed to have orchestrated the killing. Investigators suspected Suspect Kim fled the country. Despite multiple attempts to locate him, Suspect Kim was never found. A warrant was issued for his arrest, and he was prominently featured on SJPD’s Most Wanted Fugitives social media channels.

After extensive social media exposure, Suspect Kim is believed to have entered a U.S. Embassy in the country of Laos to inquire about travel documentation. Without a current extradition treaty in place with the country of Laos, the suspect freely left the embassy.

SJPD detectives were notified of Suspect Kim’s location. Following high level diplomatic cooperation from the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Diplomatic Security in Vientiane and Laos authorities, with the assistance of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Department of Justice, Office of International Affairs, Laotian authorities arrested Suspect Kim for immigration violations. With the assistance of the FBI, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the FBI Orange County Violent Crime Task Force, Suspect Kim was removed from Laos and eventually transported back to the United States by FBI personnel on June 9, 2026. SJPD Homicide Detectives took custody of Suspect Kim on June 10, 2026 and transported him back to the city of San José where he was ultimately booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail for murder.
