On June 9, 2026, at approximately 9:37 AM, San José Police Department Patrol Officers responded to the area of North Capitol Avenue and Gay Avenue to investigate a traffic collision involving a vehicle and a bicyclist. The preliminary investigation revealed the following:
A white 2025 Mazda SUV, occupied by an adult male driver, was traveling northbound on Capitol Avenue approaching Gay Avenue when it struck an adult male bicyclist, who was traveling in the bike lane northbound on Capitol Avenue.
The Mazda immediately fled from the scene but came to a stop further north on Capitol Avenue. The driver was identified by witnesses and taken into custody by arriving officers. A records check of the vehicle revealed the Mazda to be a reported stolen vehicle, taken earlier that morning.
The pedestrian suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
This incident marks the city’s 19th fatal collision and 19th traffic-related death of 2026.
The identity of the decedent will be released by the Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner.
The driver, 43 year old Nicholas Loftis, was booked into the Santa Clara County Jail for felony hit and run, manslaughter, and possession of a stolen vehicle.
