On July 14, 2026, at approximately 8:56 PM, San José Police Department Patrol Officers responded to a report of a vehicle collision involving a pedestrian in the area of Capitol Expressway and Copperfield Drive. The preliminary investigation revealed the following:
A black 2018 Tesla sedan, occupied by an adult male driver and two juvenile passengers, was traveling eastbound on Capitol Expressway just east of Copperfield Drive when it struck an adult male pedestrian. At the time of the collision, the pedestrian was crossing Capitol Expressway in an unknown direction outside of any marked crosswalk.
The pedestrian succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver remained on scene and cooperated with the investigation. While on scene, the driver and juvenile passengers were later transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
This incident marks the city’s 25th fatal collision and 25th traffic-related death of 2026. This is also the 11th pedestrian death of 2026.
The identity of the decedent will be released by the Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner.
