On August 2, 2026, at approximately 2:16 AM, San José Police Department Patrol Officers responded to a report of a hit and run traffic collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian in the area of Bernal Road and Via Del Oro. The preliminary investigation revealed the following:
A black 2017 Chevy pickup truck, occupied by an adult male driver, was traveling eastbound on Bernal Road when it struck an adult male pedestrian who was on Bernal Road at its intersection with Via Del Oro.
The pedestrian succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver fled the scene prior to police arrival.
Through extensive follow up, SJPD Patrol Officers located the suspect vehicle in the city of San José. The suspect driver was contacted and was determined to be under the influence of alcohol. The suspect was arrested and booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail for driving under the influence, vehicular manslaughter, and felony hit and run.
The investigation is active and ongoing.
This incident marks the city’s 26th fatal collision and 26th traffic-related death of 2026. This is also the 12th pedestrian death of 2026.
The identity of the decedent will be released by the Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner.
