Deputy Chief Macedonio Zuniga was born and raised in the city of San José to immigrant Spanish-speaking parents. Growing up, he lived in various neighborhoods throughout San José, allowing him to experience the various cultures and communities. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from San José State University. Prior to becoming a San José Police Department (SJPD) Officer, Deputy Chief Zuniga interned in the industrial field where he worked in close knit teams to resolve various concerns and learned the importance of teamwork through collaborative effort and effective communication. 

With over twenty years of experience with SJPD, Deputy Chief Zuniga has spent over half of his career working in the Foothill Division or in a specialized assignment. As an Officer he was assigned to the K-9 and MERGE Units, prior to promoting and becoming a front-line supervisor. When he promoted to the role of Sergeant, Deputy Chief Zuniga attended the Sherman Block Leadership Institute to develop personal growth and knowledge to strengthen his role within the Department. Deputy Chief Zuniga leveraged the knowledge gained from the eight-month program during his tenure in the SJPD Robbery Unit where he was one of two supervisors who oversaw the investigations of all robbery, extortion, kidnapping for ransom, and other robbery-related crimes. 

Deputy Chief Zuniga was promoted to rank of Lieutenant in 2020 and was reassigned back to the Special Operations Division where he oversaw the METRO, VCET, and Street Crimes Units. These units focus on conducting proactive street-level enforcement addressing many quality-of-life concerns that affect our diverse community. As a Lieutenant, he also attended the Los Angeles Police Department Leadership Program where he learned the dynamic relationship between the leader, the led, the situation, and how each has a direct effect on organizational success and shaping culture. Deputy Chief Zuniga was reassigned to the Internal Affairs Unit, a unit tasked with ensuring the department maintains the trust and confidence of the community by conducting fair, thorough, and complete criminal and administrative investigations on allegations made against department members. 

Before being promoted to the role of Deputy Chief, he was the Captain of the Foothill Division, covering approximately 42-square-miles and five City Council Districts, with a population exceeding 300,000 residents.

Currently serving as the Executive Officer, Deputy Chief Zuniga oversees the Division of Cannabis Regulation, the City Attorney Investigators, the Police Department Fiscal and Personnel Units, the Permits Unit, Research & Development, and the Secondary Employment Unit.
