Assistant Chief of Police Ali Miri

Ali Miri was born in Tehran, Iran, and immigrated to San Jose with his family in 1979. He was raised in the community he now serves and attended Athenour Elementary School, Dartmouth Middle School, and Leigh High School, developing strong local roots that continue to shape his commitment to public service.

Ali earned his Bachelor of Science degree from San José State University in Kinesiology, with double minors in Biology and Chemistry. Prior to beginning his law enforcement career, he worked in the biotechnology industry, gaining valuable analytical and professional experience that would later inform his approach to leadership and problem-solving in policing.

Throughout his career with the Department, Assistant Chief Miri has served in a wide range of assignments, including Patrol, the Violent Crimes Enforcement Team (VCET), METRO, the MERGE Unit, Sexual Assault Investigations, and Homicide. These roles provided him with extensive operational and investigative experience across some of the Department’s most complex and demanding functions.

Assistant Chief Miri has demonstrated proven executive leadership, most recently serving as the Captain of the Central Patrol Division, where he was responsible for overseeing day-to-day operations, personnel management, and community engagement in one of the City’s busiest divisions.

He has completed the LAPD Leadership Program and is a graduate of the California POST Command College. He is currently enrolled in the University of San Diego’s Master of Science program in Law Enforcement and Public Safety Leadership, further reinforcing his commitment to professional development and modern policing practices.

On Monday, January 26, 2026, Ali Miri was appointed to the role of Assistant Chief of Police, where he assumed command of Department operations.
