National Night Out

National Night Out LogoJoin over 38 million neighbors across more than 16 thousand communities around the nation for National Night Out, an annual community building campaign that promotes police/community partnerships and neighborhood spirit to make our neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live.

Your event must be registered locally with SJPD to make it possible
for police and/or city officials to visit.

Every first Tuesday of August

National Night Out is designed to:

  • Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police/community partnerships
  • Heighten crime prevention awareness
  • Generate support for, and participation in, local crime prevention efforts
  • Build connections within the community and get to know your neighbors

Neighborhoods participating in National Night Out events throughout San Jose are asked to join in a city-wide effort to strengthen neighborhoods by planning an event with their neighbors. Light up your street by turning on outside lights, and spending the evening with your community and local police department.

Neighborhoods will be hosting a variety of events ranging from small potlucks and BBQ's to large block parties. Some additional event ideas include, but are not limited to, ice cream socials, games, contests, food or clothing donations, plan a clean-up day to beautify a common area, discuss neighborhood issues or set neighborhood goals, discuss or plan a Neighborhood Watch Program. It is an opportunity to be creative, have fun and celebrate your neighborhood!

National Night Out registration generally opens in mid-May every year. Registering your neighborhood is free and gives police and other city representatives an opportunity to attend local events as time and circumstances permit.  You do NOT have to be a current Neighborhood Watch neighborhood to participate.

Once your event is registered we will put you on our list of event sites to visit during the evening. We make every effort to visit as many events as possible. But we can't visit if you don't register!

Event Questions & Answers

Q: If San Jose is already registered nationally, why should my neighborhood register with SJPD?

A: The Crime Prevention Unit of the San Jose Police Department will log your event, number of participants, time and location. This will allow us to try and have Police and other City representatives stop by and visit your event.

Q: Can we request the Police Department to attend and put on presentations or provide a resource table with pamphlets etc. at our event?

A: SJPD Crime Prevention Unit representatives will be assigned to visiting various National Night Out (NNO) events throughout the city on the day of NNO. Therefore, staff and resources are unable to provide any presentations (including PowerPoint presentations and informal presentations) or host any resource tables at NNO events. We thank you for your understanding and hope you register locally with SJPD so that we can coordinate attending your event!

Q: How can our neighborhood participate in this year’s National Night Out?

A: Participating neighborhoods nationwide are asked to turn on outside lights, lock their doors, and spend the evening outside with neighbors and Police. Neighborhoods will be hosting a variety of events ranging from small pot-lucks and BBQ’s to large block parties. Be creative, it’s up to you.

Q: Is National Night Out just for current Neighborhood Watch areas?

A: No!!! National Night Out is for everyone. The exciting thing about National Night Out is the opportunity to meet neighbors and celebrate your neighborhood. It’s also a good opportunity to look toward the future and plan events to promote neighborhood safety and unity.

Q: When should we begin planning our National Night Out event?

A: Today! Register now and begin planning your event as soon as possible
