Deputy Chief: Shawny Williams

Shawny Williams joined the San Jose Police Department on March 8, 1993. As an officer, he worked in patrol and was then selected to work in the following specialized assignments: Special Operations- Violent Crime Enforcement Team, Field Training Officer, Hostage Negotiator, and as a Detective in the Gang Investigations Unit.

Officer Williams was promoted to Sergeant on February 7, 2003. As a sergeant he supervised patrol officers and was selected to the following specialized assignments: Night Detective, Homicide Detective, and Internal Affairs Investigator. Sergeant Williams was promoted to Lieutenant on February 7, 2007. He served as a Patrol Watch Commander for three and half years, as the Commander of the Assault/ Juvenile/Missing Person Unit, and Acting Captain in the Foothill Division.

Lieutenant Williams was promoted to Captain on October 10, 2011. As a Captain he commanded the Bureau of Administration which includes the following units: Personnel, Recruitment, Background, Police Academy, Training, Gun Range, Evidence Facility, Central Supply, Photography and Video Unit. On February 16, 2014 Captain Williams assumed command of Southern Division in San Jose. Southern Division is the largest division in San Jose, approximately 123 square miles, and is home to approximately 400 thousand residents.

On February 15, 2015, Shawny Williams was promoted to the rank of Deputy Chief of Police for the San Jose Police Department. He now commands the Bureau of Investigations which oversees all major crime investigations for the City of San Jose.

Deputy Chief Williams holds a BA degree from Simpson University, a M.A degree in Organizational Leadership from Fort Hays State, and is a graduate of the FBI NA Academy (2012). As the Chief of Investigations, Deputy Chief Williams believes the office does not belong to him but rather to the people he serves. Chief Williams emphasizes sharing information with the community regarding crime patterns, trends and preventative steps to enhance public safety and quality of life. Law Enforcement leadership is a sacred trust, as such; all officers must exercise integrity, diligence, compassion, and above all reverence for the letter and spirit of the law.
