San Jose, Calif. - On Wednesday, May 11, 2016, at 7:11 AM, San Jose Police Officers were dispatched to a traffic collision in the 1300 block of Lansing Ave. Officers arrived and could not locate a collision. Two officers circulated the area and were in the 1400 block of Lansing Ave. when they saw the female victim in front of a house with the suspect chasing the victim. The suspect was armed with an axe and struck the victim in the back. The victim fell to the ground and officers fired at the suspect. The suspect fell to the ground and dropped the axe. The suspect was attempting to reacquire the axe when one of the officers deployed his Taser on the suspect with little effect. The suspect raised the axe and struck the victim in the head. Officers fired at the suspect, he fell to the ground, and was taken into custody. The suspect sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

The suspect and victim were transported to a local hospital where they are listed in stable condition. No officers were injured. Suspect Daniel Rynazewski is the victim's son. He will be booked into the Santa Clara County jail for assault with a deadly weapon and attempted murder.      

The officers will be placed on routine paid administrative leave. The San Jose Police Department's Homicide Unit is conducting the criminal investigation. The case is being monitored by the San Jose Police Department's Internal Affairs Unit, the Office of the Independent Police Auditor, and the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office.
