SJPD is investigating an Officer Involved Shooting that occurred on 3-12-16

San Jose, Calif. - On Saturday, March 12, 2016, at 3:23 a.m., San Jose Police officers responded to the 7-11 Store located at 1430 Fruitdale Ave. on a report that a suspect confronted the victims outside the store and fired a weapon in their direction. Three patrol officers arrived immediately after being dispatched and located the suspect vehicle leaving the scene with two occupants.

The officers initiated a high risk car stop at Meridian Ave. and Fruitdale Ave. When the vehicle came to a stop, the suspect leaned out of the driver's window and fired multiple shots at the officers, striking one of the patrol cars. Three officers returned fire. The suspect, later identified as Steven Pedroza, was shot at least once. Suspect Pedroza was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. An adult female passenger was also arrested, questioned and released.

Suspect Pedroza will be booked into the Santa Clara County jail on 3 counts of attempted murder of a police officer and unlawful discharge of a firearm.    

The officers will be placed on routine paid administrative leave. The San Jose Police Department's Homicide Unit is conducting the criminal investigation. The case is being monitored by the San Jose Police Department's Internal Affairs Unit, the Office of the Independent Police Auditor for the City of San Jose, and the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office.
