San Jose, CA — On Monday, June 19th, the Shop with a Cop Foundation of Silicon Valley will open up the classroom for an inaugural summer reading camp for 25, eager, 3rd graders. This program is a free enrichment program for students that are at the border of becoming proficient readers. The program is designed not only to close the achievement gap but to foster a love of reading, while promoting positive youth development. Funding and collaboration for this program was provided by the ABC/ Disney Corporation's "Magic of Reading", Chevron Corp., Franklin McKinley School District, private donors. Participating police agencies are: San Jose Police, Santa Clara Co. Sheriffs, CA Highway Patrol. Volunteer police officers will be encouraged to stop by and check in on students' progress. Police officers will distribute books and escort children on local field trips.

About Shop with a Cop Foundation: Shop with a Cop Foundation is an all-volunteer organization that promotes positive interaction between police and under-served youth. "One of our programs focuses on reading literacy for 3rd to 6th graders. Reading is the foundation for all learning. An alarming number of children- about 67 % nationwide and more than 80% of those are from low-income families-are not proficient readers by the 3rd grade. This has significant and long-term consequences not only for these children but for their communities. We are taking these students from learning to read to reading to learn. We are hosting these children for a free camp and assisting families that are economically constrained and cannot afford the usual summer camps." – Darrell Cortez Founder and Executive Director

FMSD School Board members and local elected officials will be available for comments.
